After a scoreless opening 20, Ryan Donato opened the scoring late in the middle frame with 3:08 remaining on the clock. He carried the puck to the left face-off circle and sent a whistling wrister past Connor Hellebuyck after Patrick Maroon had chipped a pass off of the left wall through the neutral zone. This ended Hellebuyck’s shutout streak at 96:51 to begin the regular season after making 30 saves on Wednesday.

Alex Iafallo had a chance for the Jets in the third when he took a centering pass from Haydn Fleury for a backhand shot in the slot, however, he was turned away by Arvid Soderblom. Getting denied twice in 9 seconds by Soderblom, Mason Appleton was first denied when he attempted to put a wrist shot from the far wall past him, and then on a diving wraparound attempt for the second time. However, Mark Scheifele‘s game-tying goal was not denied by Soderblom… Scheifele tied the game with only 1:04 remaining in regulation when he scored off a rebound of a sharp-angled shot by Nikolaj Ehlers with a backhand just outside of the crease.

For his 300th NHL goal, Mark Scheifele struck the game-winning goal only 38 seconds into overtime. He received a pass from Kyler Connor and tipped it in past Arvid Soderblom in the slot.

Mark Scheifele on the overtime win, scoring, and his 300th NHL career goal: “We had chances all night. Great help on the face-off by all the guys… Obviously, when 6-on-5 there are so many guys, you get the puck to the net, and good things happen. I was just lucky enough to be there and put her home,” – “We hit some crossbars, we had some good chances… that’s the way hockey goes. Sometimes it takes 59 minutes to get one home and bring it to overtime. It’s never over till it’s over – It’s pretty humbling to think about… it’s pretty wild. I’m very thankful for the guys I’ve played with, I’m lucky enough to play with some really good players. It’s all thanks to them.”

Ryan Donato on the Hawks’ performance, Arvid Soderblom almost getting a shutout, and Pat Maroon: “We played a solid game. Sodie played great. You got to play 60 minutes of good hockey, not 59. At the end of the day, we did some good things, but it’s just not good enough,” – “He did everything that he should’ve to earn one. He played a heck of a game – Patty is definitely a guy that can make plays. So, anytime I’m out there with him, I’m trying to let him know where I am. He’s pretty good at finding guys. So, it was a good play by him.”
