In December 2022, Poulin took a break from hockey to focus on his mental health and returned to play in March 2023.

Prior to becoming professional, Poulin played four seasons in the QMJHL for the Sherbrooke Phoenix and Val-d’Or Foreurs. He played 173 games for Sherbrooke, tallied 80 goals with 124 assists, and served one season as Assistant Captain and two seasons as Captain.
