
Yesterday, news broke that 37-year-old forward Nicklas Bäckström is signing with Brynas IF of the Swedish Hockey League. The Swedish native missed this past season while dealing with a nagging hip injury. The last game Bäckström played in was October 29, 2023, when the Capitals faced the San Jose Sharks. He played in just eight games that season, recording an assist.

Nicklas Bäckström
The Washington Capitals drafted Bäckström fourth overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He spent his entire 17-season NHL career with the Capitals. He went on to play in 1,105 career games, recording 1,033 points on 271 goals and 762 assists. Bäckström was a +83 with 421 power-play points, 86 of which came via goals. He had two shorthanded goals, 39 game-winning goals, and 504 penalty minutes. Bäckström finished second in Calder Memorial Trophy voting in 2007-08, losing to Patrick Kane. In 82 games that season, he had 69 points on 14 goals and 55 assists. He was a +13 with 25 power-play points, four game-winning goals, and 24 penalty minutes. He helped lead the Capitals to a Stanley Cup in 2017-18. Backstrom, during the lockout in 2012-13, played in the KHL with the Dynamo Moskva. In 19 games, he had 25 points on ten goals and 15 assists. He was a plus-nine with ten penalty minutes. Bäckström also had the most assists on an Alex Ovechkin goal, which broke the record for most goals this past season. Bäckström has 279 career assists on Ovechkin’s goals.
