ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Americans returned to action at Blue Cross Arena after a week off, but a slow start led to a 2-1 loss to the Charlotte Checkers.
The Amerks found themselves trailing 1-0 after former Amerk C.J. Smith scored for Charlotte midway through the first period. Despite a strong push in the second, Rochester just couldn’t even the score, and the game remained 1-0.
In the third period, the Amerks thought they had tied the game when Jagger Joshua’s shot crossed the line, but the goal was waved off due to goaltender interference. Charlotte then sealed the win with an empty-net goal from John Leonard, making it 2-0 late in the game.
Josh Dunne robbed Charlotte of a shutout with a goal in the final second of the game, assisted by Noah Östlund. Both goaltenders had solid performances, with Charlotte’s Kaapo Kähkönen stopping 24 of 25 shots to earn the win, while Devon Levi made 16 saves on 17 shots in the loss.
