ROANOKE, Va. – A season high number of fans gathered in the Berglund Center on New Year’s Eve, 6300+ strong. It was not meant to be, for the Dawgs, as the Fayetteville Marksmen took the shootout win, 5-6.
The first period saw both teams evenly matched, with Roanoke’s Carson Gallagher scoring first, early in the period. Fayetteville’s Ryan Nolan tied it up not long after, quickly followed by a goal from Dawg Gustav Müller. Roanoke took the lead going into the first intermission, 2-1.
A quick power play goal from Roanoke’s Mac Jansen, early in the second period, seemed to give Fayetteville momentum. They netted four goals, closing the rather one sided play in the second period with a score of 5-3.
Fayetteville’s strong defense held off Roanoke most of the third period. That is, until less than two minutes were left in the game. The Dawgs broke through the defense with two goals about a minute apart from Stephen Alvo and Mac Jansen, to tie things up and send the game to overtime. The Dawgs outshot the Marksmen during the OT period, but Fayetteville goalie Ryan Kenny had other plans. For the first time this season, the Dawgs were in a shootout. Gustav Müller and Fayetteville’s Ryan Nolan both scored in the shootout. It was Fayetteville’s Vitali Mikhailov that clinched a win for the Marksmen. Roanoke goalie Austyn Roudebush saved 22 of 27 shots while Fayetteville’s Ryan Kenny stopped 42 of 47 shots.
