JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In their third game in three days, the Jacksonville Icemen continued their Military Appreciation Weekend with their second matchup against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. Wearing their Publix Sunday Funday jerseys for the afternoon game, Jacksonville took a 3-1 win, sweeping the two-game weekend series and extending the team’s point streak to 10 games.
A fast-paced start to the game ensued, with Jacksonville riding the momentum of the shutout from the previous night. At 4:09 of the first period, Olivier Nadeau scored on a centering feed from Cameron Supryka to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead. Nadeau now leads the team with 17 goals so far this season. Liam Coughlin made it 2-0 on a tic-tac-toe passing from Brody Crane and Bennett MacArthur at 8:28. During their first power play of the game, Greenville finally found the back of the Jacksonville net on a goal by Carter Savoie to make it 2-1. Savoie blasted the puck on net on a pass from Bryce Brodzinski, which ricocheted off the pads of Matt Vernon, up and over him, and deflected off the stick of Lordanthony Grissom, who was trying to bat it away.
The second period was scoreless, in part thanks to Greenville’s Jacob Ingham‘s goaltending prowess. Ingham turned away 25 shots on goal during the period, aided by four Icemen power plays, which Jacksonville could not capitalize on. This was also a period shot record for Jacksonville.
The third period also looked like it would be scoreless until Chris Grando tapped in a controversial empty net goal with 2.2 seconds left on the clock. With Ingham pulled from the net for the extra attacker, Jacksonville cleared the puck down the ice, which looked to be icing. The whistle never blew, and the Greenville player skated past the puck, leaving it sitting just outside the blue paint, which Chris Grando swooped up behind and tapped into the net to make it 3-1.
Jacksonville will head to Texas for the first time to face the Allen Americans, for a three-game back-to-back series starting on Friday. Greenville will next face the Savannah Ghost Pirates on Friday in Savannah.
