JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Icemen faced the visiting Greenville Swamp Rabbits for a mid-week battle on Wednesday night. After being down 1-0 for over 41 minutes of play, Jacksonville made a dramatic third period push to take a 3-1 victory over Greenville. Icemen captain Christopher Brown scored two goals, with the second and game winning goal coming with 1.25 left in the game.
Tate Singleton scored Greenville’s only goal of the game on a powerplay at 7:29 of the first period. With an Icemen player unable to retrieve his lost stick, Bryce Brodzinski from the left circle slid the puck across to Singleton on the right, who one-timed it into the net past netminder Matt Vernon. The second period remained scoreless and penalty-free. Both teams had sustained pressure and scoring chances throughout the first two periods, with Matt Vernon and Dryden McKay both coming up big to make the saves.
Jacksonville finally tied the game up at 8:56 of the third period. Logan Cockerill, in his first game back after being out injured for several weeks, created a two-on-one with Brenden Harris, who, on a center feed pass from Cockerill, made a drop pass to Christopher Brown, who one-timed it into the net on a tic-tac-toe goal. With less than two minutes left in the game and fans expecting it to go overtime, Jacksonville scored a go-ahead goal to make it 2-1. A speeding Logan Cockerill rushed up the left side and around the back of the net for a wrap-around goal attempt, which Dryden McKay blocked. Christopher Brown picked up the rebound and jammed it into a wide-open left side of the net for his second of the night. With just over a minute left in regulation, Greenville pulled their netminder for the extra attacker but quickly lost possession of the puck. Noah Laaouan sent the puck back down the ice, which deflected off a Greenville player for a slight change in direction and went into the net with 52 seconds left in the game, to secure the win.
Jacksonville faces the Atlanta Gladiators on the road Friday night, returning home to face the Florida Everblades in their last home game prior to Christmas. Greenville’s next game is their Teddy Bear Toss Night on Saturday against the Atlanta Gladiators.
