WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and instate rival Hershey Bears faced off Saturday night in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The Penguins took a 3-2 overtime victory.
The first period saw the only goal being scored by Hershey’s Mike Vecchione at the 18:36 mark for the 1-0 lead headed into the first intermission.
During a spirited second period, the Bears held onto the lead until Atley Calvert tied the game late in the period. In the third, the Penguins took the lead on Atley Calvert’s second of the game at 6:52 of the period. The Penguins held the lead late into the period when Mike Vecchione scored his second of the game at 18:29 to tie things up and force the game into overtime .
During OT, there were chances and big saves on both ends of the ice until Avery Hayes ended the game with his 19th goal of the season at 2:09 to give the Penguins the win.
