CEDAR PARK, Texas – Friday night, the Texas Stars defeated the visiting Iowa Wild 6-4 in a high-event game that once looked like an easy victory for the Stars but ended much closer than the final score would indicate.
The Stars opened the scoring in the second period with a trio of goals from Kyle McDonald, Mavrik Bourque, and Derrick Pouliot. Iowa would answer back with goals from Steven Fogarty and Sammy Walker, making it 3-2. In the third period, Matej Blumel regained the Stars’ two-goal lead on a breakaway goal, making it 4-2, but that would be short-lived as Iowa’s Adam Beckman would tie the game 4-4 with two goals within two minutes of each other. The game seemed destined for overtime until a Derrick Pouliot goal with four minutes left in the third put the Stars back in the lead. Fredrik Karlstrom would end the scoring for the night with an empty net goal in the game’s final seconds. Matt Murray stopped 33 of 37 for the win, and Jesper Wallstedt stopped 24 of 29 in the loss.
