ROANOKE, Va. – As the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs’ annual Family Weekend continued, the Knoxville Ice Bears arrived at the Berglund Center for the Saturday night game. While Knoxville took the 5-4 win in over time, the near sellout crowd on Superhero night was loud and proud. The ongoing rivalry between these teams created tension on the ice, as gloves were thrown down several times during the game.
Knoxville goalie Zane Steves was a tough wall to topple, with 57 saves. Roanoke’s Owen McDade made the first two goals in 79 seconds in the first period. After Knoxville took the lead in the third period, the penalty boxes turned into revolving door booths with at least eight more penalties. Roanoke’s Brenden Stanko tied up the game in the last 2 minutes of the game. In overtime, Knoxville’s Dawson McKinney gave them the first win against Roanoke in five meetings.
