ROANOKE, Va. – It was “White Out” night at the Berglund Center on Saturday. The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs were decked out in their white uniforms as they took on the Knoxville Ice Bears. The resulting 5-4 win included a couple firsts for the Dawgs. Aidan Girduckis had his first regular season pro goal, and Cory Doney scored his first ever pro goal.
The first period was dominated by the Dawgs, with back-to-back goals from Girduckis and Doney. Knoxville’s Dawson McKinney netted an unassisted goal, closing the period with a score of 2-1. The second period saw Roanoke gaining two, with power play goals from Mac Jansen and Billy Roche.
The third period was full of action as the Ice Bears attempted a strong comeback. Roanoke Captain Nick Ford netted a goal, making it 5-1, with 16 minutes left. Knoxville started making their comeback at 5:47, managing two more goals. It was in the final four minutes of the game that both Nick Ford and Owen McDade received game misconducts. McDade was also given a five minute major for slashing. This gave Knoxville a 5 on 3 power play, for the the rest of the game. The Dawgs mounted some strong defense as Roanoke goalie Tyler Roy held off the shots. He allowed just one goal during that final penalty kill, closing the game with a 5-4 win for Roanoke.
