ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Americans faced off against the Laval Rocket on Sunday afternoon to compete for first place in the AHL North Division. The game was extra special for Rochester as it was Kid’s Night and included a birthday celebration for the beloved Amerks Moose mascot. The atmosphere was full of excitement as many local mascots were in attendance, including mascots for the Rochester Red Wings (MiLB), Rochester Knighthawks (NLL), Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, and local colleges- including St John Fisher University, Nazareth University, and Rochester Institute of Technology. The mascots joined in on activities during intermission, mingled with fans, and happily cheered on the Amerks.
The first period saw the Amerks fall to a 2-0 deficit, due to goals scored by Laval’s Florian Xhekaj and Alex Barré-Boulet. Rochester’s Jack Rathbone responded by the end of the first period to cut Rochester’s deficit to 2-1.
The second period saw Mason Jobst tie the game at 2-2, but Laval regained the lead with two quick goals from Owen Beck, pushing the score to 4-2. The Amerks kept battling to kill the deficit, but they were unable to find the back of the net in the final period.
Laval, on the other hand, added an insurance goal in the third period, as Sean Farrell brought the victory to a final score of 5-2. Goaltender Devon Levi made 7 saves on 11 shots before being replaced by Michael Houser, who stopped 11 of 12 shots. Laval’s Connor Hughes ended the night with 34 saves on 36 shots.
