DETROIT, Mich. – On the one-year anniversary of their first trip to the Wolverine State, the Professional Women’s Hockey League made its penultimate stop on the 2025 Takeover Tour back in the Motor City. Walking into the arena, the atmosphere was nothing but anticipation with fans traveling in from every corner of the Great Lakes Region to show up and support a growing league. With the crowd showing up in masses, the PWHL surpassed the achievement of 1,000,000 fans attending games, 1,001,648 to be exact as of the game, as well as Detroit setting the record once again for the largest attendance for a professional women’s hockey game in the United States with 14,288 fans showing, giving the league that many reasons to be the perfect expansion location.
The Reigning Walter Cup Champions, Minnesota Frost, came into this game looking to keep a hold on the fourth and final playoff spot whilst the New York Sirens looked to close the gap and make their first playoff appearance. With four homegrown skaters hitting the ice, Mellissa Channell-Watkins (Plymouth, MI) for the Minnesota Frost, Taylor Girard (Macomb, MI), Elle Hartje (Detroit, MI), and Abby Roque (Sault Ste. Marie, MI) for the New York Sirens, The Puck was dropped and the game was on.
Minnesota lit the lamp six minutes into the game on a Frost power play. However, New York would shut them out the rest of the night. Scoring twice in the first period, followed by a third goal quickly in the second, the Sirens managed to dominate the game and score an empty netter to gain three much-needed points in the standings in a 4-1 Victory.
