ROANOKE, Va – A crowd of 7,012 fans were present for Looney Toons night at the Berglund Center on Saturday, as the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs faced the Pensacola Ice Flyers. The Dawgs were edged out by the Ice Flyers, with a 3-2 final score.
Roanoke had the 1-0 lead, after they dominated the first period, but a second period interference call sent Roanoke’s Steven Leonard to the penalty box. The following power play tied the game, as Pensacola’s Houston Wilson scored. Pensacola started taking control, closing out the second period with a 2-1 lead.
The third period saw the Dawgs score again, courtesy of Bailey Morrissette, to even the score at to 2-2. Despite both teams creating chances, both goalies held them off, bringing on overtime. In the OT period, Dawgs’ John Macdonald took a huge hit from Pensacola’s Malik Johnson, sending him to the locker room. Play resumed after some ice cleanup. The next face off created a chance for Johnson to score through a mass of Dawgs players trying to help cover the net, taking the win 3-2. The Dawgs split the weekend series with the Ice Flyers, with both teams taking a win.
