PORTLAND, Maine – The Maine Mariners wrapped up a weekend series sweep against the Reading Royals on Sunday.
The game started with a handful of strong scoring chances on both sides of the ice, but ultimately the teams left the first period tied at zero.
Halfway through the second, Patrick Guay of the Mariners beat Royals’ goaltender Vinnie Purpura with a backhand bid to open up the scoring. The Royals managed to tie it up, but not for long, as Christian Berger’s goal came just one minute and eight seconds later to restore Maine’s lead.
In the third period, Brooklyn Kalmikov scores two goals for Maine while Reading puts on an impressive comeback effort. Powell Connor’s goal with just under 50 seconds remaining in the game put the Royals one goal behind at 4-3. This effort was quickly thwarted by the Mariners’ game ending goal, the second from Kalmikov, on an empty net. Despite the going 0/3 on the power play, Maine’s 5v5 work was able to keep an impressive Reading team at bay to secure the sweep with a 5-3 win.
