JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Friday night marked the start of the Jacksonville Icemen‘s Military Appreciation Weekend. The Savannah Ghost Pirates were Jacksonville’s first opponent of the three-game weekend for the Icemen. Savannah took a 5-4 overtime victory, with Jacksonville extending their point streak to eight games.
Jacksonville opened up the scoring with a goal from Chase Lang on a center feed from Bennett MacArthur at 5:27 of the first period. Ty Cheveldayoff and Josh Davies both dropped the gloves for a fight. Cheveldayoff is currently tied for first place in the league for the most major penalties and third in penalty minutes. Logan Cockerill put Jacksonville up 2-0 at 15:18, but Savannah got themselves on the board 48 seconds later on a goal from Logan Drevitch. Now, with some momentum, Savannah’s Devon Paliani tied things up less than two minutes later at 18:03 to end the period tied at 2-2.
Olivier Nadeau put Jacksonville back on top during the second period with a power-play goal, but once again, Savannah answered back less than five minutes later on a goal by Evan Nause, who was able to slide the puck under the pads of Matt Vernon. Third-period action once again saw goals from both teams. An innocent wrist shot by Icemen Captain Christopher Brown from the blue line beat Evan Cormier to make it 4-3 to Jacksonville. Less than 90 seconds later, Liam Walsh tied it up with just over three minutes left in the game, forcing the game into overtime. Patrick Guay scored the game-winner at 5:39 of OT to give the Ghost Pirates a much needed win, as they currently sit in sixth place in the South Division.
Jacksonville will continue its Military Appreciation Weekend with back-to-back games against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits on Saturday night and on Sunday afternoon.
