SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah Ghost Pirates put up a valiant effort on Thursday night as they faced off against the South Carolina Stingrays for College Night. The energy was high as forward Riley Hughes, fresh off his return from Charlotte, opened the scoring in the first period, giving Savannah an early spark. The game remained tightly contested through the opening frame, but tensions boiled over late in the first period when Connor Lovie and Charlie Combs dropped the gloves in a heated exchange. Despite the Ghost Pirates’ strong start, the Stingrays found their rhythm in the second period, netting three goals to seize control heading into the final period.
Fatigue set in for Savannah as the third period wore on, but a series of penalties by the Stingrays gave the Ghost Pirates a late opportunity. Taking full advantage, Savannah capitalized with two power-play goals, cutting into South Carolina’s lead. However, the late push wasn’t enough to complete the comeback, as the Stingrays held on for a 5-3 victory.
