PORTLAND, Maine – The Maine Mariners competed in their first-ever game against the Tahoe Knight Monsters on Friday night at the Cross Insurance Arena. Maine secured one point in a 3-2 overtime loss to Tahoe. Tahoe’s Brennan Kapcheck netted the overtime winner, beating Maine’s netminder Ryan Bischel on a breakaway after only 0:42 seconds of three-on-three action.
Though both teams were meeting for the first time, there was no shortage of intensity or emotion. The Mariners opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Jimmy Lambert. Just one minute and 27 seconds later the Knight Monsters responded on the man advantage, with a power play goal from Simon Pinard.
In the second period, Maine’s newly acquired forward Lynden McCallum scores for the 2-1 lead in his debut game. Defenseman Tristian Thompson, also in his Maine Mariners debut, picked up an assist on the play. Soon after, a Knight Monster’s game-tying goal from Jake McGrew kept things locked up at 2-2.
The game remained tied through the third period, sending the game to OT. Just 0:42 seconds into overtime, Kapcheck collected the stretch pass from Pinard and slid the puck under the pads of Maine’s Bischel before crashing into him. The Knight Monsters’ goal was reviewed for goaltender interference, but was ultimately determined to be a good goal. Tahoe secured the 3-2 OT win against Maine to start a nine-game road trip.
