Rochester, N.Y. – Friday night, Blue Cross Arena hosted the Rochester Americans second home game of the season against the Toronto Marlies. The Americans continued their slow start to the season and were beaten 4-2.
A high pace first period led to multiple scoring chances, but the only goal of the period would be scored shorthanded by Amerks forward Anton Wahlberg. The call for too many men somehow gave the Amerks the jolt and they held the lead going into the second period.
Four minutes into the second, Konsta Helenius scored his first professional goal in America for the Amerks. However, this would be the final goal of the game for the Amerks. Cedric Pare scored shortly after for the Marlies. After that, former Amerk Alex Nylander scored unassisted for the Marlies after the puck took a weird bounce in the corner while being played by Amerks goalie Felix Sandstrom. With several minutes left in the period, Alex Steeves got the lead for the Marlies.
In the final period, Steeves scored again for the Marlies less than a minute into the period. This was the final goal of the game – Artur Akhtyamov looked great in net for the Marlies and finished the game strong.
Sandstrom finished the night stopping 17 of 21 shots faced for the Amerks, and Akhtyamov stopped 26 of 28 shots faced for the Marlies. Neither team was able to score on the power play – the Amerks went 0-5 and the Marlies 0-4.
