Pittsburgh Penguins Placing Goalie on Waivers

Pittsburgh Penguins Placing Goalie on Waivers

The Pittsburgh Penguins 2024-25 season hasn’t gone according to plan as they are currently 18-20-8 with 44 points. They sit four points out of the final Wild Card spot. Last night they dropped their third straight game and their seventh in their last eight. Reports from Chis Johnston on X (formerly Twitter) today say they are placing goalie Tristan Jarry on waivers this afternoon. Jarry got the start last night and allowed three goals on 17 shots. The Penguins goalie tandem will likely now be Alex Nedeljkovic and Joel Blomqvist. Jarry if he clears waivers tomorrow will either be sent down to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL or he’ll become a free agent.

Tristan Jarry

The Penguins drafted Jarry 44th overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He made his debut on April 9, 2017, and suffered the loss giving up three goals on 25 shots. His first full season in 2017-18 he appeared in 26 games. He went 14-6-2 with a .908 save percentage and a 2.77 goals-against average. Jarry’s appeared in 278 games for the Penguins over nine seasons. He is 144-92-29 with a .910 save percentage and a 2.74 goals-against average. He’s a two-time All-Star and has finished seventh in Vezina Trophy voting twice in 2019-20 and 2021-22. That 2021-22 season was one of his best as he went 34-18-6 with a .919 save percentage and a 2.42 goals-against average.

This season in 21 games he is 8-7-4 with a 3.32 goals-against average and a .886 save percentage. Jarry’s played in five games at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton going 4-1-0 with a .926 save percentage and a 2.16 goals-against average. He hasn’t won a game since December 23rd. Since then he is 0-2-2 with a 2.81 goals-against average and a .880 save percentage. He re-signed with the Penguins before the 2023 season for five years. It’s expected he’ll clear waivers, but it won’t be a surprise if a goalie-needy team claims him, especially with the wide-open Eastern Conference playoff race.
