Player Profile: Adam Lowry

Adam Lowry of the Winnipeg Jets

Adam Lowry was born on March 29th, 1993, in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. He is a left-shot centre who has spent his entire NHL playing career with the Winnipeg Jets. Lowry is listed as 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds. Although born in America, Lowry spent his early playing days in the Calgary minor hockey scene. He would later enter the junior hockey scene where he played for the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League (WHL).

Drafted 67th Overall by the Winnipeg Jets

Leading up to the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Lowry had spent two seasons with the Swift Current Broncos. In his 2009-10 season, he posted 34 points (15G, 19A) in his 61-game season. He followed up his rookie WHL season with 45 points (18G, 27A) in 66 games. He also won the Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Trophy as the Scholastic Player of the Year in 2009-10 and was the runner-up for the same award in 2010-11.

Lowry ranked 58th among North American skaters when the final rankings from the NHL Central Scouting Bureau were released for the 2011 draft. While he didn’t hear his name called on June 24th, he didn’t have to wait long the following day to hear his name finally called. The Winnipeg Jets selected Adam Lowry with their 2011 third-round draft pick at 67th overall.

For the 2011-12 season, Lowry returned to the Broncos where he posted 37 points (12G, 25A) in 36 games. He took another significant jump in development in the 2012-13 season when he dawned the captaincy crest for the Broncos and posted 88 points (45G, 43A) in 72 games. Even though he concluded his junior career, he still won the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the 2012-13 WHL Player of the Year.

On April 4th, 2013, Lowry signed an amateur tryout contract (ATO) with the St. John’s IceCaps, the Winnipeg Jets’ former American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. He played six games and notched one assist during that run. He would later find himself invited to the Jets’ 2013 Development Camp and later the Jets’ training camp. He signed his entry-level contract (ELC) on April 16th, 2013, and played his 2013-14 season with the IceCaps. Lowry became a permanent fixture at centre with the IceCaps and proved dominant in a defensive role.

He posted 33 points (17G, 16A) in 64 games with the IceCaps and reached the 2014 Calder Cup Finals which the team would be swept in. Lowry would find himself with the Winnipeg Jets in the 2014-15 season on the third line. He later scored his first career NHL goal on October 21st, 2014 in the Jets’ 3-1 winning effort against the Carolina Hurricanes. Lowry finished his rookie season with 23 points (11G, 12A) in 80 games for the Jets.

His 2015-16 season saw a minor step back in production and a stint with the Jets’ new AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. Lowry posted four assists in four games for the Moose and was recalled to the Jets soon after. His 2015-16 season saw him record 17 points (7G, 10A) and a growing maturity as an NHL regular.

Lowry’s First and Second Contract Extensions

Heading into the 2016 offseason, Lowry was a restricted free agent (RFA) and quickly signed a two-year contract extension on July 14th, 2016. Lowry posted a then career-high of 29 points (15G, 14A) in 82 games in year one of the contract and was on pace for 40 points in year two of the contract. His 21 points (8G, 13A) in 45 games during 2017-18 was enough to earn Lowry a three-year contract extension during the 2018 offseason.

While Lowry took a slight step back in production, he took on a more significant role within the Jets’ organization. He became a top penalty killer for the Jets around this time and honed his game as a stronger defensive centre. Additionally, Lowry showed a more physical side to his game, jumping to his teammates’ defence and giving the Jets more physical presence on the ice.

Current Contract and Becoming Captain

Lowry was set to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1st, 2021, but the Winnipeg Jets locked him up to a five-year contract extension on April 16th, 2021. Lowry would become a stronger voice on and off the ice for the Jets and would eventually become an alternate captain in the 2022-23 season. Lowry’s production only went up from there too, he would be named the captain of the Winnipeg Jets on September 12th, 2023, the third captain since the Jets relocated to Winnipeg.

Despite being born in America when Lowry’s father, Dave, played for the St. Louis Blues, Adam was raised in Calgary, Alberta, when Dave Lowry played for and coached the Calgary Flames. Adam Lowry has represented Canada internationally at the 2022 Men’s World Championship where Canada won the silver medal.
