Martin Necas was born on January 15, 1999, in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czechia. His father, Martin, was a hockey coach in Czechia. Necas played 61 total games with the HC Zdar nad Sazavou 16U over two seasons and scored 53 goals with 76 assists. During the 2015-16 season, the right-shot forward played for the HC Kometa Brno U18 team and won the U18 championship while registering nine goals and 21 assists in 18 games and then tallying the most assists and points in the postseason.

Martin Necas was the tenth overall draft pick in the 2016 KHL Draft by Traktor Chelyabinsk. During the 2016-17 season, Necas played for HC Kometa Brno and had the most points (15) by a U18 junior and won the Czech Extraliga Rookie of the Year.

The Carolina Hurricanes Selected Martin Necas in the First Round of the 2017 NHL Draft

Martin Necas was the 12th overall draft pick in the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes and was touted as a winger with offensive-minded, high-end puck skills. On July 14, 2017, Necas signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Hurricanes worth $2.68 million. Necas recorded the most assists and points in the 2018 World Junior Championships and was voted a Top 3 Player in the tournament.

Martin Necas’ NHL Debut to Today

Martin Necas made his NHL debut on October 17, 2017, against the Edmonton Oilers and played 6:54 of ice time over 13 shifts. Necas scored his first NHL goal almost exactly a year later, on October 16, 2018, against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Necas’ best season was 2022-23, when he registered 28 goals and 43 assists. Necas was rewarded with a two-year, $13 million contract on July 29, 2024.

On January 24, 2025, Necas was traded to the Colorado Avalanche as part of a three-team trade. Necas finished his career in Carolina with 113 goals and 185 assists in 411 regular-season games and recorded 30 points in 59 playoff games. Through February 20, 2025, Necas has totaled 117 goals and 190 assists and will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 season.
