Player Profile: Mason Lohrei

Mason Lohrei was born on January 17, 2001, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In 2017-18, Lohrei attended Culver Military Academy Prep School in Culver, Indiana, and played 46 games with seven goals and 15 assists. The tall defenseman played 42 games in 2018-19 with 27 points before joining the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL for nine games at the end of the season.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound defenseman became a force for the Gamblers the next season with 37 points in 48 games. With 29 assists, Lohrei was at the top for any blue-liner in the league and earned second-team all-star honors. As an assistant captain during the 2020-21 season, Lohrei was USHL Defenseman of the Year after an outstanding season that saw the Wisconsin native score 19 goals with 40 assists in 59 games.

Mason Lohrei Drafted 58th Overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2020 NHL Draft

The Boston Bruins selected Lohrei in the second round of the 2020 draft, the 14th defenseman chosen. Dobber Prospects described Lohrei as a “Big, poised defenseman with a good first pass. Lohrei can contribute to both special teams.” Elite prospects had the following evaluation. “Where Lohrei stood out was as a puck-carrier. His puck skills in small-area situations stuck out as a distinct positive in a few instances, particularly for someone of his stature. He’s got a snappy wrist shot, with good form and an ability to generate a lot of power with minimal movement, suggestive of a really strong upper body”.

Lohrei committed to Ohio State University and made an immediate impact as a workhorse defenseman for the Buckeyes. During the 2021-22 season, Lohrei scored four goals with 25 assists in 29 games and made the Big Ten All-Rookie Team. The following season, the left-shot defender had four goals and 28 assists and was selected third-team All-USCHO.

Boston Bruins Sign Mason Lohrei to Two-Year, Entry-Level Contract

On May 10, 2023, the Bruins signed their promising defenseman to a two-year, entry-level deal that is worth an annual salary cap hit of $925,000. Upon signing the deal, Lohrei played five games with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League and had one assist before playing three postseason games for Providence.

Lohrei began the 2023-24 season with the Baby Bruins and played seven games with four assists.

Mason Lohrei’s NHL Debut

On November 3, 2023, Lohrei made his NHL debut with Boston in a 3-2 shootout win over Toronto at TD Garden and became the first Louisiana-born player to play in the NHL. Lohrei played 21:28 of ice time and collected one assist and three shots on net. Lohrei has a bright future and is one of the Bruins’ top prospects. Lohrei scored his first NHL goal on November 6, 2023, in a 3-2 win at Dallas. The rookie defenseman scored four goals with nine assists in 41 regular season games and played well in the playoffs with one goal and three assists in 11 games. Lohrei will be a restricted free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season.
