
Matt Boldy was born on April 5, 2001, in Millis, Massachusetts. The left-shot winger split the 2016-17 season with the Dexter Southfield School and the Cape Cod Whalers 16U team. With Dexter Southfield, Boldy registered 13 goals and 13 assists in 29 games and then totaled 15 goals and 10 assists in 13 games with Cape Cod.
Boldy joined the United States National Team Development Program for the 2017-18 season. Boldy played 34 games with the juniors, scored 12 goals with 23 assists, and contributed eight points in eight playoff games against USHL teams. Boldy also registered 29 goals and 47 assists in 61 games. In the World Hockey Championship, Boldy totaled three goals and six assists in six games while winning a Gold Medal.
The next season, Boldy became assistant captain and scored 33 goals with 48 assists in 81 games. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound forward contributed 43 points in 28 games against the USHL. Boldy committed to Boston College for the 2019-20 season and recorded 57 points in 56 NCAA games over two seasons. Boldy made the All-Rookie Team and was a Hobey Baker Award finalist his sophomore season for top NCAA player.
The Minnesota Wild Drafted Matt Boldy in the First Round of the 2019 NHL Draft
Matt Boldy was chosen with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild. Boldy was the eighth forward selected in the draft. Pre-draft, Elite Prospects described Boldy as “a highly skilled winger. He is a finesse player with impressive creativity, a quick release, and fine playmaking ability. Not the fastest of skaters, Boldy’s hockey sense and overall skill level still allow him to be a reliable offensive threat”. Boldy signed a three-year, entry-level contract worth $2.64 million on April 1, 2021.
Matt Boldy’s NHL Debut to Today
On January 6, 2021, Matt Boldy made his NHL debut against the Boston Bruins near his hometown and scored his first NHL goal. In 47 games during his rookie season, Boldy scored 15 goals and added 24 assists, which resulted in him finishing eighth in Calder Trophy voting. The next season, Boldy had his only 30-plus goal season with 31 and 32 assists. During that season, Boldy signed a seven-year, $49 million contract extension with Minnesota. Matt Boldy was a member of 2025 Team USA during the Four Nations Face-Off.
