Max Domi was born on March 2, 1995, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Max’s father, Tie Domi, was a second-round draft pick, 27th overall, of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1988 NHL Draft. Tie played 1.020 regular season NHL games over 15 seasons and scored 104 goals with 141 assists. The fighting forward collected 3,515 penalty minutes and also registered 19 points in 98 postseason games.

Max is a left-shot forward who played for the Dons Mills Flyers U16 team and totaled 27 goals and 30 assists in 30 games during the 2010-11 season. In 2011, Domi was the eighth overall draft pick in the first round of the OHL Priority Selection by the Kingston Frontenacs and the 20th overall pick in the second round of the USHL Futures Draft by the Indiana Ice. Domi played for the London Knights for the 2011-12 season and collected 21 goals and 28 assists in 62 games while winning the OHL championship and making the Second Team All-Rookie Team.

Domi suited up for the Knights for the next three seasons and was captain during the 2014-15 campaign. Domi’s Knights won the championship again in 2012-13, and the stocky forward totaled 105 goals and 177 assists over his last three seasons with London. Domi won the Gold Medal with Team Canada in the 2015 World Junior Championships.

The Phoenix Coyotes Drafted Max Domi in the First Round of the 2013 NHL Draft

Max Domi was selected with the 12th overall draft pick in the 2013 NHL Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes. Domi was described as “fairly small but a balanced skater with very good lower-body strength. Max Domi is a wonderful playmaker with fantastic puckhandling. He is a good skater with quick acceleration and elite top-end speed. Domi likes to stay low, which, combined with his tremendous skating and skills with the puck, compensates for his small stature.” Domi signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Coyotes on July 14, 2013 for $4.28 million.

Max Domi’s NHL Debut to Today

Domi made his NHL debut on December 9, 2015, and scored his first NHL goal against the Los Angeles Kings while adding an assist over 14:22 of ice time. Domi scored 18 goals with 34 assists in 81 games that season and was sixth in Calder Trophy voting for NHL’s top rookie. On June 15, 2018, Domi was traded to the Montreal Canadiens for forward Alex Galchenyuk. Domi played two seasons with the Canadiens and scored 45 total goals.

On October 6, 2020, Domi was again traded, this time to the Columbus Blue Jackets with a third-round pick for Josh Anderson. Domi scored 18 goals in 107 games with Columbus before being shipped to Carolina on March 21, 2022, where he played 19 games and scored two goals. On July 13, 2022, Domi signed a contract with the Chicago Blackhawks and registered 18 goals and 31 assists that season until he was traded on March 2, 2023, to the Dallas Stars, where he scored two goals with seven assists in 20 games. Domi has spent the last two seasons with Toronto on one-year deals.

As of February 18, 2025, Max Domi has played 708 regular season games and tallied 133 goals and 304 assists. In 50 postseason games, Domi has recorded seven goals and 19 assists. Max Domi will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2024-25 season.
