Who is Megan Keller?

Megan Keller was born on May 1st, 1996, in Farmington, Michigan, and grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois. Keller is considered one of the greatest American defensive women’s hockey players. Keller was named assistant captain for PWHL Boston in their inaugural season and signed a 3-year contract in 2022.

Junior Hockey

Keller has been on skates since she was just three years old. During her interview on the jocks in jills podcast, she stated that she got into hockey early. This was because her brother Ryan would play. She then begged her parents to sign her up. She also stated that at first, she would not take skating lessons without full hockey gear.

Collegiate Career

Keller spent her four years of college at Boston College. She is considered one of the most dominant and influential players in college hockey history. She led all defensive players in points in the nation and broke several team and conference scoring records for defense. She is the career leader in defenseman scoring (158), goals (45), and assists (113). She also sits in the top 10 overall in points. Her college career was historical and set the bar for future college defencemen.

International Career

Keller first laced up for USA hockey back in 2013 with the U-18 team. Over the past decade, she has cemented herself as one of the greatest American defenders in the game. She represented the U.S. in two Olympic Winter Games (gold in 2018, and silver in 2022). Along with the Olympic medals, Keller has won five World Championship gold medals and three silver medals. She was a part of the three-peat from 2016-2018 Four Nations Cup. She led all skaters with a plus/minus rating of +9 at the 2014 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship.

Professional Career

Keller was a part of the Professional Women’s Hockey Player’s Association (PWHPA) from 2019 until 2023. She spent this past year in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). She signed a 3-year deal in Boston and was named assistant captain before the start of the season. In the inaugural season, she was one of the best defenders in the league and was dominant on the ice. She sustained a few injuries throughout the season. She managed to record 15 points in 24 games in the regular season. She also recorded 4 points in 8 games during the playoffs.

Personal Life

Keller runs her hockey camp “Megan Keller Hockey Camp” during the summer. Her last camp was this past June in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She is very close friends with a former Team USA teammate, Amanda Kessel. Kessel is also the manager of minor league operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League. They run their own podcast together called the Keller and Kess show.

Her Impact On the Game

Keller has inspired many younger athletes to pursue their dream of playing. She is one of the greatest American defenders in the game. She has left her legacy at Boston College. She is already making an impact in the PWHL. She is known for her dominant playmaking. She proves that hitting and checking is not just for men in the NHL. She will be a great mentor for the few rookie defenders from the 2024 draft. They will make their debut this fall.
