Alec Regula was born on August 6, 2000, in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan. Regula’s brother CJ played five seasons of college hockey at Ohio State University and RPI and is currently a defenseman with the Worcester Railers of the ECHL. The Regula’s stepbrother, Keeghan Howdeshell, is also a member of the Railers. Alec is a defenseman who played high school hockey at Cranbrook Kingswood School for two seasons. In 54 games total, Regula scored six goals with 25 assists. In 2016, Regula was selected in the second round with the 22nd overall pick by the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League.
In 53 games with the Steel, Regula scored one goal with four assists and contributed one assist in five playoff games. The London Knights drafted the right-shot blue liner in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection with the 74th overall pick. Regula played three seasons with London from 2017-2020 and scored 27 goals during the 2019-20 season, which secured him a spot on the Third All-Star Team.
The Detroit Red Wings Draft Alec Regula in the Third Round of the 2018 NHL Draft
Alec Regula was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft with the 67th overall pick. Regula was ranked 72nd among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting and was praised for his hockey sense, mobility, and ability to remove the gaps. He was not a player noted for his offensive game, and most of his contributions leading up to his draft year came on the defensive side of the game. He was a defender who had the potential to shut down opposing top lines. Regula signed a three-year, entry-level contract on November 11, 2019, with the Chicago Blackhawks after being acquired in a trade with Detroit for Brendan Perlini.
Alec Regula’s NHL Debut To Today
On May 6, 2021, Alec Regula made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks in a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Regula played 17 shifts in 14:16 of ice time and registered one shot, one hit, and one blocked shot. Regula scored his first NHL goal on April 18, 2022, against the Calgary Flames. On June 26, 2023, the Blackhawks traded Regula to the Boston Bruins in a deal that included forwards Nick Foligno and Taylor Hall. Regula is currently a member of the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League and posted four goals and 22 assists with a plus-36 rating during the 2023-24 season. The 6-foot-4, 207-pound defenseman signed a one-year deal for the 2024-25 season with Boston.
