The PWHL New York team announced today, July 11, their first addition for the new season. Maja Nylén Persson has been signed to a three-year standard player agreement contract.

The international player from Avesta, Sweden, was drafted by the team as their second pick of the draft. She was picked in the second round and was 10th overall. Persson was the first international player to be picked in the 2024 draft.

Last season in the SDHL, she recorded 38 points in 36 games, leading the league in assists and points by a defensemen.

During the 2024 worlds women’s hockey championship, Persson was considered one of the best three players in her national team.

It is important to remember that the New York team ended last in the standings in the inaugural PWHL season. Even with great players on its roster, the leadership and technical staff weren’t able to do proper work. This is noticeable when three PWHL New York players were finalists for the PWHL’s season awards.

As of now, the previous coach has been let go, and Greg Fargo will take his place behind the bench next season. They have also gathered two new assistant coaches, those being Josh Sciba and Lauren Williams.

The defensive player, as stated by GM Pascal Daoust, will add on the leadership for the team, as she was previously an alternate captain and captain through her time at the Svenska hockeyligan (SDHL).
