The Bruins will enter the 2022-2023 season with two of their starting defenseman out with injuries after having off-season surgery. Having depth in the NHL is important as injuries can pop up anytime and decimate a team. The Bruins will enter the season with six healthy defensemen in Hampus Lindholm, Brandon Carlo, Mike Reilly, Jakub Zboril, Derek Forbort, and Connor Clifton, while Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk recover.
It was announced today per CapFriendly, that the Boston Bruins have signed defenseman James Greenway to a professional tryout (PTO):
Greenway, a New York native, was drafted 72nd overall in the third round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Bruins acquired Greenway’s signing rights on June 26th, 2021, from the Leafs in exchange for future considerations.
The 24-year-old split his 2021-2022 season between the Providence Bruins and the Maine Mariners (ECHL), which are both affiliates of the Boston Bruins. In 16 games for the P-Bruins, he played 16 games, recording two assists and 17 PIMs, and in 26 games for the Maine Mariners added another five assists and 28 PIMs.
The 6’5″ 211 pounds left-shot defenseman is the younger brother of Minnesota Wild forward Jordan Greenway.
While it is safe to assume he will not be making his NHL debut with the Bruins this year, they can continue to see what the big body Greenway can bring to the ice and if there are long-term hopes for him to one day make an impact at the NHL level.
