The Bruins kicked off their season the other night with a 5-2 victory on the road against the Washington Capitals. The Bruins were missing some key players as they work their way back from offseason surgery. One of the biggest names missing was defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who is still rehabbing from shoulder surgery that was required due to a nagging injury that was worsened during the team’s playoff series against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Early reports initially had McAvoy returning sometime around the New Year, and as he has progressed through rehab, it has slowly dwindled down to a mid to late-November timetable. The defenseman recently met with Bruins media and discussed the matter himself:
”It’s hard to look that far into the future and to have that date circled. We’re really just worried about one day at a time and making sure that we are stacking those foundation bricks ahead of each other.”
The latest on McAvoy’s return is that he and the staff are aiming for a return just before or after the Thanksgiving weekend, which is the 24th of November.
While fans want to see McAvoy back on the ice as soon as possible, making sure the star defenseman is 100 percent before taking the ice is the primary goal. He will be a welcomed addition to the Bruins’ blue line as he should thrive in head coach Jim Montgomery’s new scheme of getting the defensemen heavily involved in the offense. Last season the Boston faithful saw McAvoy take a significant step forward offensively as he scored ten goals and added 46 assists for 56 points across 78 games. At 24 years old, he is just scratching the surface of his talent as he still hasn’t entered his prime.
