Jake DeBrusk was the hero at this year’s 2023 Winter Classic as he helped the Bruins erase a 1-0 deficit late in the game. The Bruins trailed the Penguins in the third period, but thanks to the tenacious play by the 26-year-old winger, he was able to beat Pittsburgh goalie Casey DeSmith twice as the Bruins secured a 2-1 win. The goals were DeBrusk’s 15th and 16th of the season, as he is on pace for a career year.
That was until news broke today about an injury he sustained during the game. DeBrusk was seen exiting Fenway Park in a boot which is never a great sign. This afternoon Frank Seravalli confirmed everyone’s worse fears as Jake DeBrusk sustained a fractured fibula that will keep him out for the foreseeable future.
There is no timetable on how long he will be out as he still needs to undergo further testing. This is certainly a damper for the young forward and a tough blow to the Bruins’ top line.
The Bruins have recalled winger Chris Wagner from the AHL Providence Bruins to provide depth until DeBrusk can return. Expect Craig Smith to see time on the top line as he’s done in the past.
