Report: Iowa Wild Closing in on New Head Coach

The Iowa Wild didn’t reach the Calder Cup playoffs. They finished with a 27-37-6-2 record and 62 points. This was eight points out of a playoff spot. The team missed the playoffs for the second consecutive season. As a result, the team dismissed Brett McLean. They had hired him on May 30, 2023. McLean finished 54-74-10-6 as the Wild’s head coach. Reports are that the Wild are now closing in on hiring Greg Cronin. Cronin was the Anaheim Ducks’ head coach this past season. The Ducks finished 35-37-10 with 80 points and missed the playoffs for the seventh consecutive season. Cronin was the Ducks’ head coach for two seasons, in which he finished with a 62-87-15.

Greg Cronin

Before the Ducks hired him, Cronin coached the Colorado Eagles in the AHL. Cronin coached the Eagles for five seasons starting in 2018. He finished his time with the Eagles with a 164-104-21-9. Cronin made the playoffs with Colorado in four of his five seasons. The only season he didn’t make it was because it was cancelled due to COVID. Cronin was also a head coach with Northeastern University from 2005-2011. He also head-coached the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL in 2003-04 and 2004-05. He finished his time with the Sound Tigers going 78-61-12-9. The Wild are getting a coach who has found success in the AHL. They aim to make it back to the Calder Cup Playoffs in 2025-26.
