The time had to come eventually. As NHL.com Dan Rosen reported, New York Rangers goalie coach Benoit Allaire is stepping back from his assistant coaching position as the team’s goalie coach.
Jeff Malcolm, who has had the position with the AHL Hartford Wolfpack, will now take over for Allaire with the Rangers. Brendan Burke, son of Sean Burke, will now be the Wolf Pack’s new goalie coach.
Allaire was hired as an assistant coach with the Blueshirts in 2004. In his second year, he began his famed relationship with rookie Henrik Lundqvist. His 20-year tenure as goalie coach saw him coach goalies such as Cam Talbot, Anti Raanta, and, most recently, Igor Shesterkin and three-time Stanley Cup winner Johnathan Quick.
Despite a rough start to the 2023-’24 season, Shesterkin posted a 26-17-2 record with a .912 save percentage and 2.58 goals-against-average while leading the Rangers to the Eastern Conference Championship.
Jeff Malcolm has been in the organization for the past six years, including the last three in Hartford, during which he has worked closely with Allaire. As a player, Malcolm played four seasons with the Wolf Pack between 2013-14 and 2016-17, as well as stints in the ECHL. Before turning pro, Malcolm helped the Yale Bulldogs win their first NCAA National Championship in 2013, earning a 36-save shutout against Quinnipiac in the Championship Game.
Allaire will remain with the organization, and he has been part of the process of hiring Malcolm for his new position with the Blueshirts.
