The Toronto Maple Leafs are close to signing collegiate free agent John Prokop to an entry-level contract, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Prokop is a 23-year-old defenseman from Wausau, Wisconsin, who went undrafted in the NHL and just finished his three-year career with Union College.
In 36 games with Union this season, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound blueliner registered 27 points with eight goals and 19 assists. After the 20223024 season, Prokop was a Hobey Baker Award nominee. Prokop is a left-shot defenseman who previously spent four seasons in the United States Hockey League with four different clubs.
John Prokop is eligible to play for the Maple Leafs if signed to an NHL deal, but will more likely sign an Amateur Tryout for the rest of this season with the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies with his contract beginning with the 2025-26 season.
