The City of Calgary Mayor, Jyoti Gondek, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, and CEO of Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corp. held a small press conference today to announce an agreement in principle between all three parties, plus the Calgary Stampede to develop and build a new stadium.
The new stadium will also include a community arena, and other surrounding infrastructure improvements were announced, all part of the city’s Rivers District masterplan. Gondek called today a “Milestone day” during the presser as “…we have been able to reach a place where we have exceeded the original goal” in regards to completing the plans from 2021.
The announcement also included that the City of Calgary will pitch in $537 Million, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation, and the Province will pitch in the remaining $656 million dollars for the new home of the Flames, Wranglers, Hitmen, and Roughnecks.
“This announcement will help us put Calgary and the province back on the map for major concerts,” John Bean, president, and CEO of CSEC, said when speaking to the media and public. Bean also mentioned that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was excited about the new stadium, and according to Mr. Bean, Calgary would be back in rotation for All-star games and Drafts.
As Alberta is about to head to the polls, and as such, Councilor Sonya Sharp was asked if the money from the UCP lead Danielle Smith would be contingent on re-election Sharp replied, “I think that we all very much realize that the money is coming from the Government of Alberta, regardless of the party,”
We’ve been down this road before in Calgary. However, this proves that hope is still on the horizon for the Flames to stay where they’ve called home for the past 43 years.
