Stars Snap Skid With 5-4 Shootout Win Over Capitals

The Dallas Stars were in the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Capitals on Thursday night. The Stars beat the Capitals 5-4 in a shootout at Capital One Arena. Dallas improved to 15-7-3, while Washington fell to 12-8-3.

The Stars’ starting lineup featured Jani Hakanpää, Tyler Seguin, Esa Lindell, Matt Duchene, Mason Marchment, and Scott Wedgewood. Wedgewood made 23 saves for a win. Meanwhile, Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren made 34 saves in a losing effort.

The Capitals struck first at home. Aliaksei Protas fired a wrist shot into the Stars’ net for a 1-0 lead at 7:11 of the first period. Connor McMichael and Nick Jensen collected the assists on Protas’ third of the season.

The Stars responded with a game-tying goal. Tyler Seguin fired a wrist shot into the Capitals’ net to tie the game, 1-1, at 15:38 of the first period. Sam Steel and Miro Heiskanen collected the assists on Seguin’s ninth of the season.

The Stars and Capitals were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period. Dallas outshot Washington 10-6 after the first 20 minutes.

The Capitals opened the second period scoring with two goals in nearly three minutes.

Dylan Strome sent a wrist shot past Scott Wedgewood to help the Capitals to a 2-1 lead at 4:31 of the second period. Tom Wilson and Trevor van Riemsdyk collected the assists on Strome’s team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Evgeny Kuznetsov used a wrist shot to extend the Capitals’ lead to 3-1 at 7:14 of the second period. Matthew Phillips and Aliaksei Protas collected the assists on Kuznetsov’s fifth of the season.

The Stars made it a one-goal game. Mason Marchment received a pass from Matt Duchene and ripped a snap shot past Charlie Lindgren to cut the Capitals’ lead to 3-2 at 14:19 of the third period.

The Stars trailed the Capitals 3-2 at the end of the second period. Dallas outshot Washington 24-18 after 40 minutes.

The Stars tied the game with an early equalizer to open the third-period scoring. Roope Hintz capitalized on the man advantage and deflected the puck for a power-play goal to tie the score 3-3 at 1:51 of the third period. Jamie Benn and Jason Robertson collected the assists on Hintz’s ninth of the season.

The Capitals regained the lead. Dylan Strome fired a wrist shot into the Stars’ net on the man advantage for a power-play goal and a 4-3 lead at 9:08 of the third period. Anthony Mantha and Alex Ovechkin collected the assists on Strome’s tenth of the season.

The Stars tied the game again, thanks to Roope Hintz’s second of the game. Hintz scored a power-play goal on a wrist shot to tie the score 4-4 at 13:47 of the third period. Jason Robertson and Joe Pavelski collected the assists on Hintz’s tenth of the season.

The game was tied 4-4 at the end of regulation and went into overtime. Dallas outshot Washington 36-25 after a full 60 minutes.

The game remained in a 4-4 tie at the end of the overtime and went into a shootout. Dallas outshot Washington 38-27 after 65 minutes.

The shootout shifted in the Stars’ favor. Jason Robertson scored in the first round, Scott Wedgewood made a save on Alex Ovechkin’s shot, and the Stars beat the Capitals 5-4 in a shootout. Dallas outshot Washington 38-27 in the end.
