BOISE, IDAHO — After the departure of Jared Moe, who signed a PTO with the Tuscon Roadrunners, the Idaho Steelheads have signed Riley Morris, a Southern Professional Hockey League goaltender.
Morris, a Calgary, Alberta native, has prior ECHL experience playing stints with the South Carolina Stingrays, Kansas City Mavericks, and Tulsa Oilers in the 2022-23 season. He registered a .950 SV% while playing one game with the Stingrays but struggled during his time in Kansas City, only posting a .750 SV% in one game for the Mavericks. He picked it back up in Tulsa, though, posting a .889 SV% in his 15 games played there.
This season, Morris has played nine games for three different SPHL teams, registering a .893, .868, and .896, respectively, averaging a .882 SV%. His record on the season is 3-6-0.
Before his professional career, Morris played 141 AJHL games with Okotoks Oilers. In 2017-18, Morris was named AJHL’s best goaltender and CJHL’s Top Goaltender with a 1.98 GAA and a.922 sv%. After his time with the Oilers, Morris played 53 games for Mount Royal University in Calgary, AB. His career average in college was 2.65 GAA with a .903 SV%.
Coming in at only 5’10”, Morris is undersized for a goalie. He will likely slot into the lineup as a backup option to Bryan Thompson, who has a 2.88 GAA and a.908 SV% in 27 games.
