The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that they have signed Head Coach to a two-year extension; the financials of the deal were not disclosed. Keefe has spent the past four-plus seasons as the head coach of the Maple Leafs after taking over for Mike Babcock on November 20th, 2019; since taking over, the Leafs have put up a 166-71-30 record, and have made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in all four seasons including back to back 50+ win seasons in the past two years, and last season made it past the first round for the first time since 2014. There were questions on whether or not Keefe would stay on as the Leafs got rid of General Manager Kyle Dubas earlier this Summer and replaced him with Brad Treliving. Despite the Maple Leafs not being able to live up to the high expectations that are expected of the team in a big market like Toronto, Keefe’s numbers show that he’s the right man for the job, and he’s been with the Maple Leafs organization since the 2015-16 when he was brought on as the Head Coach of the Toronto Marlies, as he would lead them to their first Calder Cup Championship in 2018.
Heading into next season, the Leafs will have two new assistant coaches after Spencer Carbery took a head coaching gig. Joining the Maple Leafs Staff is Guy Boucher who last coached in the NHL in 2019 as the head coach of the Ottawa Senators and Mike Van Ryn who had spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach with the St.Louis Blues.
