Tough losses have the Detroit Red Wings looking to reset

Consistency is what every sports team strives for. Consistency is not a find it and put it down goal; it is a find it and try to perfect it. The Detroit Red Wings have had some tough losses and, in the midst of it, have lacked consistency. Looking to shake out of the rough patch, the Red Wings to create more chances and manage games better; that would be a starting point to finding the cure.

The Red Wings’ defenders have been caught off guard too often, leading to easy goals by the opposition. It would be different if there were multiple injuries to defensive players, but that is not the case. At times players are not getting back, leading to odd-man rushes, while other times, players are simply out of position to be effective.

The Red Wings need to get back to playing the simple defense that allowed them to win some of the tight games they have been losing. You’ve heard the phrase, “don’t overthink it,” That is pretty much what the defensive unit needs to do.

The faceoff percentage continues to be a thorn in Detroit’s side. They are giving up many goals due to lack of wins in the faceoff circle. That appears to be easier said than done. A player who struggles in faceoffs is unlikely to suddenly be able to win the puck. This should be a priority at practices.

While Tyler Bertuzzi has been activated off of IR and is undoubtedly a welcome sight, Bertuzzi himself is not enough to right the ship. Sure the offense should get a boost, but better passes in the offensive end and better shots on goal would be better than a player coming back.

That said, in the coming days and weeks, Detroit is set to get some players on IR back. Combined with better all-around execution, this should be a real aid to a team in need of it. While this is not a total get back to basics, it is to get back to what works. The formula head coach Derek Lalonde implemented during training camp and the formula that saw the Red Wings get off to a solid start to the season.

It would be easy for the Red Wings to let it all get away from them. Yet, listen to players and coaches; they all seem to be on the same page, find consistency and keep repeating it.
