Washington Acquires Joel Edmundson from Montreal

The Washington Capitals and the Montreal Canadiens have completed a trade involving defenseman Joel Edmundson. While Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes looks to ditch cap space, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan looks to add experience and size to his blueline.

Montreal acquired a third-round pick and a seventh-round pick to give Washington Joel Edmundson at 50% retention.

The Brandon, Manitoba-born hockey player, won one Stanley Cup championship with the St. Louis Blues in 2019 and appeared in another Stanley Cup Final in the 2021 season with the Montreal Canadiens.

This trade alleviates cap pressure on Montreal and provides Washington with an experienced defenseman to stabilize the team. Edmundson has played 477 games in his career, posting 28 goals and 76 assists for 104 points. Edmundson is also a career-plus 23 and has a total of 438 penalty minutes.
