The eagle isn’t the only thing that’s screaming! Washington Capitals fans around the globe let out a collective squeal of delight when the team announced that they would be bringing back the fan-favorite “screaming eagle” jersey– an iconic throwback look from the team. The jersey features black, blue, and gold as its primary colors and boasts a mighty-looking eagle on the chest. The jersey will be worn at home six times throughout the 2024-2025 season:
Wednesday, Nov. 6th vs. Nashville Predators
Friday, Nov. 29th vs. New York Islanders
Tuesday, Dec. 31st vs. Boston Bruins
Saturday, Jan. 18th vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Saturday, Feb. 1st vs. Winnipeg Jets
Sunday, April 13th vs. Columbus Blue Jackets
Fans can also purchase their own Screaming Eagle jersey online beginning on October 10th.
This jersey announcement comes as part of the team’s 50th-anniversary season, where they will be paying homage to their roots in a variety of different ways. From the Capitals’ press release:
“It combines their first-ever third jersey and the original rebrand. The screaming eagle preying in the downward design direction is meant to evoke an eagle’s energy, power, and speed, chosen for its symbolic status as the national bird of the United States. The shoulder patch includes the Capitol building in front of two crossed hockey sticks. The logo was completed with two stars in the background and a hockey puck nested between the blades of the sticks.”
Washington’s captain, Alex Ovechkin, might be the biggest fan out there. He has been begging the team for a return of the jersey since it was retired. He was surprised with the new jersey and the team posted the reveal on social media.
“Yes! It’s good. It’s so good,” he said enthusiastically. “Love it. Thank you for surprise. It’s back, babes!”
Ovi also took the time to recreate an iconic picture from nearly ten years ago when he was just 20.
The general consensus across the board seems to be that the Screaming Eagle will go down in history as one of the best jersey designs of all time. This comes just days after the Capitals’ signature red home jersey was voted worst in the league in a poll by hockey analytics account J Fresh Hockey, with an average score of just 3.7 out of 10.
The team has redeemed itself from the hate in a most superior fashion.
