The Washington Capitals announced on Friday that they have re-signed forward Tom Wilson to a seven-year deal worth $45.5 million, with an AAV of $6.5 million; this deal will begin during the 2024-25 season. Wilson will be entering his 13th season with the Capitals after being drafted by the club 16th overall in the 2012 NHL Draft, where he’s put up 128 goals, and 167 assists for 295 points in 680 games, along with 1,299 minutes in penalties. The Ontario Native is coming off an injury-riddled season that saw him play in only 33 games, putting up 13 goals and nine assists; however, he ended his season on a high note putting up four goals and two assists for six points in the final four games of the season. There’s no question that Wilson has been known for his physicality, but when given a chance, he can be an offensive weapon for the Capitals, as he has shown, scoring 20+ goals in three seasons, most recently during the 2021-22 season.
“Tom possesses all the intangibles needed to win in this League and we are extremely pleased to sign him to a long-term contract, giving him the opportunity to finish his career in a Capitals’ uniform,” said MacLellan. “Throughout his career, Tom has improved every facet of his game through his drive and competitiveness. We feel his work ethic and leadership qualities will be a tremendous asset to our organization for years to come.”

This is a strong signing for the Capitals up-front, as there has been lots of noise about Evgeny Kuznetsov wanting out of Washington, as he still has two years left on his deal at $7.8 million. Evgeny Kuznetsov has put up 165 goals and 386 assists for 551 points in 680 games as a Capital. It’s unknown where he will end up, but he will likely be a top-six winger wherever he lands.
