We’re at my favorite time of the year. One week from the draft and the crazy what-if scenarios, so welcome to “Who Says No?” where I go through the pile of your trade proposals at CapFriendly.com and explain why I like or dislike them. And ultimately, who would say no?
As a die-hard Canucks fan, I figured I would start with Vancouver Canucks.
Trade 1: Vancouver Canucks and Dallas Stars
This trade would address some of the most significant issues the Canucks have, plus it also adds a second-round pick for this year. The loss of both Garland and Boeser would leave a hole that the Canucks would need to replace, and it still doesn’t address the third-line center issues. Plus, all three incoming players are older than Patrick Allvin said they are interested in acquiring.
As for the Stars side, they are getting depth scoring but losing their captain plus 2 top 4 defensemen and only gaining around a million in cap space. Dallas had a decent run, and the need for depth scoring is something that Dallas should be looking at; I wonder if this trade would benefit the team enough.
Who Says No: Both teams are interested in something like this just too many pieces and not enough upside for either team. I wouldn’t be overly upset if this trade or something like this came through. I don’t think it’s ideal!
Trade 2: Vancouver Canucks and Nashville Predators
The need for more top-end defensemen is the need that is fulfilled here for the Canucks, a 25-year-old right-shot defenseman is EXACTLY what Jim Rutherford and Patrik Allvin need for the team. My only concern from the Canucks perspective is who they have their eyes on in the first round of this year’s draft. The added benefit of getting a second-rounder in 2024 could be a key too.
As for Nashville’s perspective, If they have “given up” on Fabbro and have their eyes on someone who might not be there at fifteen, overall, this might be a great time to make the trade. The extra second might not be ideal for them, and they have the cap space they don’t need to make a trade here.
Who Says No: Nashville, probably. Again, if they want to jump up to 11th overall, a similar deal could get it done. The extra second might be enough for Barry Trotz to say no despite wanting to “Swing For The Fences.”
Trade 3: Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils
The Canucks need to find a 3rd-line Center; the rumors of the team looking at someone like Barbashev concern me as he doesn’t profile as a center. However, Michael McLeod, a 25-year-old RFA, is the type of player this team should look at 242 GP and a Face-off win percentage of 56.7%.
The only concern here is the asking price from McLeod and his camp; His Qualifying Offer is only around the $875K mark; I could see him signing for a 2-3 year offer for around the $2.5-3 Million mark. If Canucks management can get an offer around that mark, I see this as a favorable trade from the Canucks side.
Garland and Hoglander going to the Devils would give them the winger depth and youth that can make an impact for the Devils. Losing a player like Michael McLeod is a hit I don’t know if they’d be willing to make.
Who Says No: Devils say no unless they cannot come to a favorable deal with the young Center. Canucks, I believe, would love this deal.
