Why Morgan Geekie Is A Naturally Born Boston Bruin

On July 1st, 2023, the Boston Bruins announced they had signed Morgan Geekie to a two-year contract worth $2 million annually. The Carolina Hurricanes drafted Geekie in the third round at 67th overall of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Standing at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, the Strathclair, Manitoba-born center will look to use the opportunity with his newest NHL team.

Geekie spent only 38 games split between two seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes. While Geekie was a Hurricane, he spent much time with their AHL affiliates throughout his tenure. This led to the Hurricanes leaving Geekie unprotected ahead of the Seattle Kraken NHL Expansion Draft. The Seattle Kraken would take the center and use him as a depth forward. Geekie would post career-high numbers across the board in goals (nine), assists (19), points (28), penalty minutes (24), and a plus/minus of plus 14. Seattle would also be able to play games in the 2023 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs; Geekie would play all 13 games and post two goals and assists for four points.

The future in Boston was filled with uncertainty surrounding captain Patrice Bergeron and long-time center David Krejci. Both players were given time to think if they would be back with the club or decide to retire. Patrice Bergeron would retire from professional hockey on July 25th, 2023, and David Krejci is expected to retire from the NHL. Morgan Geekie is a center, and if given the opportunity, he could become one of the best free-agent signings by Don Sweeney.

Geekie, when given the chance, has been a strong penalty killer for the Seattle Kraken. Boston must fill the gaps in the lineup, especially with defensive forwards. Geekie signing in Boston is one of the most significant opportunities he will see in his career. However, he can also become a far more physical forward if capitalizing on said opportunity.

Boston has a ton of veteran presence, and Bergeron will likely take a role in player development. Boston also has a lot of front office staff that has played or been around hockey for a long time. The opportunity to sign with an original six franchise topped up with guaranteed money and endless potential mentoring avenues is quite lucrative.

Morgan Geekie’s frame and consistent development over the years will provide him with the potential to become a full-time middle-six forward. Boston will look to bring Geekie into the lineup and become a natural Boston Bruin. Geekie was gifted with the tools to become a Bruin, and you don’t get through playing hockey in rural Manitoba without playing a bit rough.

Opinion: Stars’ Mikko Rantanen Returns to Form At the Right Time

It was clear that Mikko Rantanen was not exactly about being traded by the Colorado Avalanche, the only NHL club he had ever known. It was in Colorado where he spent close to 11 seasons, won a Stanley Cup in 2022, had 681 points (287 goals and 394 assists), and made lifelong friends. That is […]

Edmonton Oilers Playoff Thoughts: Round 2, Game 2

It takes four wins to advance, but the Edmonton Oilers historically lose almost every Game 1. In their last 15 rounds, including Tuesday night, they’ve won only four series openers. Even in 2006, they only won one Game 1. If you include that Playoff run, just for laughs, the record is 5 Game 1 wins […]
