Winnipeg Jets Acquire Brandon Tanev and Luke Schenn

The Winnipeg Jets have made two separate trades ahead of the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline acquiring Brandon Tanev from the Seattle Kraken and Luke Schenn from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Jets traded a 2027 second-round pick to Seattle for Tanev while they traded a 2026 second-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick for Schenn.

Schenn, 35, has another season at $2.75 million after this year, giving the Jets the flexibility to build beyond this season. Tanev is a pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) after this season.

Acquiring Schenn, a two-time Stanley Cup champion when he was a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons provides the necessary grit the Jets lacked on their blueline. The right-side defender is third in the league for hits and will likely be a third-pairing guy for Winnipeg with the comfortability and confidence to move up should it be needed.

Schenn, the former Toronto Maple Leafs fifth overall draft selection in 2008 has played 1,057 career games over 17 NHL seasons with eight different teams. He’s posted 203 points (44G, 159A) and 848 PIMs.

Tanev, the former Jet, is known for his competition, grit, and speed in the playoffs, which the Jets will utilize in the post-season. He started his NHL career with Winnipeg and he returns ahead of the deadline. Tanev has spent parts of four seasons with Seattle after spending two with Pittsburgh. He’s in the final year of a six-year contract that he signed back in 2019.

Tanev, 33, has 175 points (83G, 92A) and 243 PIMs in 533 NHL games. Tanev joined Sportsnet’s Trade Deadline panel to express his excitement where he also called it a homecoming.

The Jets, who sit at the top of the NHL, likely aren’t done as the Central Division is an arms race with divisional rivals making large splashes of their own.
