Winnipeg Jets Roster News & Notes (12/30/2024)

There was quite a bit of news that took place on the Winnipeg Jets roster. They’ve placed Haydn Fleury on injured reserve, recalled the Manitoba Moose captain Dominic Toninato, provided an update on the status of Mason Appleton and Dylan Samberg and announced alongside the NHL that Mark Scheifele was the first star of the week.

It was a busy day, so here’s a roster news and notes piece to catch you up.

Haydn Fleury Placed on IR

Retroactive to December 23rd, Haydn Fleury was placed on injured reserve. The Winnipeg Jets defender is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury and it gave the Jets a reason to recall defender Dylan Coghlan from the Manitoba Moose after such a short stint with the team.

Coghlan returned to the Jets’ lineup against the Nashville Predators on December 30th as the Jets are dealing with a slew of injuries to their roster, most notably their defensive core.

Fleury, 28, was signed by the Jets in the 2024 off-season and was projected to start the year with the Moose.

Dominic Toninato Recalled

Dominic Toninato was recalled from the Manitoba Moose just before the Jets faced off against the Predators.

The Moose captain is joining a growing list of players to play with the Moose and receive a call-up this season as the Winnipeg Jets continue to have the injury bug plague them.

Toninato, 30, did not suit up against Nashville but is providing the Jets with additional depth as there wasn’t an update given but Vladislav Namestnikov blocked a shot and immediately went to the dressing room clutching his arm. Toninato being called up could give the Jets some needed depth as injuries continue to pile up.

Mason Appleton Week-to-Week

Mason Appleton wasn’t on the ice for warm-up before the Jets faced Nashville and he did not play. It was noted that he did not take part in the Jets’ optional morning skate.

Later in the day, it came out that Appleton is out week-to-week with an injury and it is to be believed that it is a lower-body injury.

Alex Iafallo took the spot of Mason Appleton on the third line with Nino Niederreiter and Adam Lowry and took Mason Appleton’s spot in the special teams’ units.

Dylan Samberg “Not There Yet”

Dylan Samberg has been skating, though it’s been a non-contact jersey, he’s skating nonetheless just a little over a month after he broke his foot in Nashville.

Scott Arniel mentioned that Samberg is not ready to practice with the Jets, even in his non-contact Jersey. At this time, he’s in a situation where he’s got to take advantage where he can have that open ice to skate on his path to recovery.

Mark Scheifele Named NHL First Star of the Week

Mark Scheifele has been playing to such a high level this season and it shows. He was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week last week and likely his first in over five years.

He recorded six points (4G, 2A) in two games which includes his 10th career hat trick in Toronto netted him the honour and gave the Jets some lighter news amidst injury turmoil to their roster.
