Women’s World Championship Day Two Recap

2025 IIHF Women's World Championships

A total of 14 goals were scored across three games on day two of the IIHF Women’s World Championship. Catch up on what you missed!

Japan Versus Norway

Japan and Norway faced off for the first meeting between these two countries in the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Japan ranks seventh in the IIHF Women’s World Ranking, while Norway ranks 14th.

Norway got off to a quick start with a goal off a face-off from Andrea Dalen at 2:15. Dalen led the SDHL playoffs with 13 points.

Japan tied the game up at 4:51 off a rebound that Akane Hosoyamada capitalized on with a backhand.

Rui Ukita made it 2-1 Japan at 13:38 on a loose puck conversion. At 15:33, Norway tied the game up on an odd player rush off the rebounded puck. However, in the second period, Mei Miura scored the go-ahead goal for Japan after she took advantage of an opening in the front of the net.

With 3:59 left, Japan was up by two goals from a neutral-zone turnover scored by Riri Noro, who was in the right place, at the right time to capitalize on the turnover.

Akane Shiga battled in the offensive zone and extended Japan’s lead to three goals off a forehand that sneaked by Ena Nystrom’s skate.

The game ended with a final score of 5-1. This was a promising start for Team Japan, which finished in eighth place last year.

Sweden Versus Hungary

Sweden earned their second win of the tournament, remaining 2-0. No goals from either team came until the second period, when Team Sweden collected a rebound in their defensive end and moved the puck up the ice, where Linnea Johansson opened the scoring.

Hungary was putting Sweden to the test throughout this game, pressing them in their zone. A redirected puck off of Lia Ljungblom found its way into the back of the net to give Sweden the 2-goal lead.

Emma Soderberg earned her first shutout of the tournament, and Linnea Johansson collected two more points with a goal and an assist.

Canada Versus Finland

Finland has had a difficult start to this tournament with back-to-back games between the U.S. and Canada. Canada came out on top in this one with a final score of 5-0.

Jennifer Gardiner played in her tournament debut and collected two goals and one assist. She joined Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey on the first line.

Gardiner opened the scoring at 6:02 with a wrister from the faceoff circle that found its way past Emilia Kyrkko. At 12:22, Emma Shelton added to the lead off a well-screened goalie.

The true Captain Clutch, Poulin, picked up a pass from Gardiner behind the net to one-time it for a 3-0 lead at 17:12.

Canada took a four-goal lead when Gardiner sent the puck towards the net, which ultimately deflected off Finnish defender Sanni Rantala. Emma Maltais made it 5-0 at 11:14 in the third period with a tip-in of Micah Zandee-Hart’s shot towards the net.

Kristen Campbell earned her first shutout of the tournament, and Gardiner had a 3-point debut to lead Canada to the big win.
