This afternoon, Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced that he had assigned forward prospect Matt Poitras to the Providence Bruins of the AHL.
Poitras is in his second season with the Bruins, although his first season was cut short by a shoulder injury that saw him out the remainder of the year. After a season and Summer of rehab, Poitras returned to the Bruins team to win a roster spot again. This time around, things haven’t gone as well for Poitras.
Matt Barry of the Bruins Benders Podcast has been alluding to Poitras spending time in the AHL. Citing AHL stints for previous Boston Bruins stars such as David Krejci, Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand, and David Pastrnak.
In his 33 games last season, he tallied 15 points(5 goals, 10 assists) and averaged 13:24 TOI. So far this season, he’s skated in 14 games, tallying 4 points(1 goal, 3 assists) and averaging 12:44 TOI. One bright spot for Poitras has been faceoffs this season, seeing a 7% increase in winning percentage.
It remains to be seen if the trip to Providence will benefit Poitras, but it can’t hurt to shield him from the roller coaster season in Boston.
