The Boston Bruins announced a series of roster moves on Wednesday, and a highly touted prospect is headed to the NHL roster.
After the news of Charlie McAvoy’s suspension, Boston recalled Mason Lohrei, Ian Mitchell, and Parker Wotherspoon from the Providence Bruins. With massive holes on the blue line, Lohrei could make his NHL regular-season debut in the coming days.
Lohrei has appeared in seven games with Providence this season and has tallied four assists. The 6-foot-5 defenseman skated in 40 games with Ohio State University in 2022-23, recording four goals and 28 assists. Lohrei was selected by Boston in the second round (58th overall selection) of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
The 2020 selection could continue the youth movement that is going on in Boston. Matthew Poitras is staying on the NHL roster after an impressive start to the 2023 season. Poitras has racked up three goals and five points in his nine-game stint with the Bruins.
But the Bruins also had to deliver some bad news. Matt Grzelcyk has been placed on long-term injured reserve, while Jakub Lauko was placed on injured reserve. The defenseman suffered an upper-body injury in Boston’s most recent match against the Florida Panthers. In nine games this season, Grzelcyk has a goal to his name.
Lauko will be missing some time as he recovers from receiving a skateblade to the eye. Luckily, the young winger is okay and will look to return to the ice in the near future. Lauko averaged just over nine minutes on ice per game so far this season.
So Bruins fans should expect to see a few new faces on the ice when Boston plays the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday.
