Detroit Red Wings Roster Moves 12/19

The Detroit Red Wings dropped a tough one to the Anaheim Ducks last night 4-3; despite mounting a comeback, it fell short. The Red Wings also suffered more losses than just on the ice, as Klim Kostin sustained an injury. For the second straight game, they lost a goalie after losing Alex Lyon on Saturday in their 1-0 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, and last night, Ville Husso went down with a lower-body injury. Today, Red Wings coach Derek LaLonde said that Alex Lyon, although he skated today would be out until after Christmas, while Husso will be unavailable for a bit. Detroit has three games in the next four days before the Christmas break, and one of those is a back-to-back on Friday and Saturday, so the Red Wings signed Michael Hutchinson to a two-way contract today, adding him to the rotation.

The move made the most sense as it was too soon to call up Sebastian Cossa; as exciting as that move would have been, he’s not NHL-ready yet and still needs time in the AHL. With Kostin now considered week-to-week after just returning from an injury, the Red Wings also recalled Austin Czarnik from Grand Rapids.

Red Wings Roster Moves By The Numbers

Michael Hutchinson

Hutchinson has NHL experience, having played in 153 games with the Winnipeg Jets, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, and Columbus Blue Jackets. He is 57-61-18 with a 2.93 GAA and a .902 save percentage. This season with Grand Rapids in the AHL, he has appeared in 13 games, going 5-7-1 with a .895 save percentage and a 2.98 GAA; he also has a shutout.

Austin Czarnik

Czarnik was just sent down yesterday, but with the Kostin injury, he is back. With Detroit this season in 15 games, he has one point coming on an assist back on October 18th. With Grand Rapids, he has played in nine games and has seven points on three goals and four assists.
